BEIJING, May 11 (Xinhua) -- Top political advisor Wang Huning on Monday called on people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait to shoulder the mission of preserving and promoting Chinese culture.

Wang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the remarks when meeting with Taiwan and mainland guests attending the third Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit in Beijing.

Wang said the summit highlights the shared belief among people on both sides of the Strait that the territory cannot be divided, the country cannot be destabilized, the nation cannot be separated, and the civilization cannot be interrupted.

He added that people on both sides of the Strait should strengthen their confidence in Chinese culture and foster a strong sense of community for the Chinese nation.

Wang called for enhanced cross-Strait cultural exchanges, deeper cooperation and integrated development across the Strait, and urged efforts to promote the innovative development of Chinese culture.

Reaffirming the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, Wang said that both sides should firmly oppose secessionist activities seeking "Taiwan independence" and their attempts to sever cultural bonds between the two sides of the Strait.

He also encouraged young people across the Strait to develop a correct understanding of history, the nation and the state, and to contribute their energy to national rejuvenation.

At the meeting, Chang Jung-kung, vice chairman of the Chinese Kuomintang party, said that people on both sides of the Strait are all Chinese belonging to one family and nurtured by Chinese culture.

Chang called for efforts to jointly preserve and promote Chinese culture on the common political foundation of adhering to the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence," with the aim of pursuing peace, development and national rejuvenation.

The third Cross-Strait Chinese Culture Summit kicked off on Monday, drawing more than 800 representatives from cultural and other sectors across the Taiwan Strait.

Song Tao, head of both the Taiwan Work Office of the CPC Central Committee and the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, presided over the opening ceremony.

Song called on people from Taiwan's cultural sector to work with the mainland to guide Taiwan compatriots in maintaining a firm stance as members of the Chinese nation, firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external interference, and work together toward national rejuvenation.

A main forum was also held on Monday. Other activities at the summit include a cross-Strait media professionals' forum, sub-forums, exhibitions, and exchange and visits.
